During the past decade, there were numerous attempts to update the 1987 National Physical Development Plan; today this is a reality. I take this opportunity to inform you that the government has commissioned consultants EDSA, a Fort Lauderdale-based landscape architecture and planning firm to prepare the National Physical Sustainable Development Plan (NPSDP) 2020 for the Turks & Caicos Islands.
This website will be used as a management tool to facilitate the plan preparation process and will offer the general public a virtual space to present their views, comments, and recommendations for a modern-day Turks and Caicos Islands.
The Consultants commenced work on the Plan in 2019 and has now completed Phase One work – Collection, Review and Assimilate Existing Data. All stakeholders – Political and Religious Leaders, Youth, Grassroots Organizations, Civil Organizations, and the general public – are encouraged to participate in the Plan Preparation Process by logging onto the website and attending Public Consultation Meetings, whether virtually or in-person to present your views and comments.
Once completed, the 2020 NPSDP will be used as one of the main planning tools in guiding and directing future developments and infrastructure investments within the Turks & Caicos Islands. The Plan will formulate environmentally-sound physical, economic, and social development strategies to address existing development pressures such as the in balance in development among the islands, uncontrolled growth in shanty town settlements, and the inequality in the distribution of economic benefits among the Belonger and Expatriate populations.
I encourage ALL to use this opportunity to let your views on the development of your islands be heard through the Plan website, surveys and public consultation outreach programs and take this opportunity to thank you for your involvement in the Plan preparation process and look forward to seeing you at the public Consultation Meetings nearest to you.
On behalf of the Government, the Ministry for Infrastructure, Housing, Planning and Development, and People of the TCI, I thank the Planning Department’s Personnel and the EDSA consulting team for the work thus far completed on the Plan.
Mr. Ian Astwood
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing, and Planning of The Turks and Caicos Islands
